Packing & Shipping Guidance

Use this page for the plain-language version of Traista\'s shipping rules: how to pack common lost items, when electronics and valuables can often still travel, and which categories are typically prohibited.

Start with a packaging workflow your team can repeat

Most shipping issues come from inaccurate contents, poor internal protection, or choosing a service that does not match the item. Keep the process simple: pack for movement, review the carrier-specific rules, and make sure the parcel record matches what is actually inside.

01
Choose a sturdy outer package

Use a structurally sound box or padded mailer sized for the item and its cushioning. Avoid weak corners, crushed cartons, or packaging that has already lost rigidity.

02
Protect movement inside the parcel

Wrap the item so it cannot shift during transit. Cushion screens, corners, jewelry cases, and any fragile edges before you close the package.

03
Match the parcel to carrier rules

Laptops, tablets, phones, watches, and similar personal items can often ship, but the selected carrier still controls battery, labeling, value, and service-level requirements.

04
Seal, label, and keep records

Remove old labels, tape all seams securely, and keep the tracking number, claim reference, and any declared-value details attached to the shipment record.

Common lost items that can often still ship

Traista is a lost and found platform, so many return shipments involve personal electronics and higher-sensitivity items. Those items are not automatically disallowed. The key question is whether the chosen carrier and service permit them under the applicable packaging and compliance rules.

Often eligible
Consumer electronics

Phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, headphones, and smartwatches can often be returned when batteries are installed, the device is undamaged, and the selected carrier service allows it.

Often eligible
Valuables and personal effects

Jewelry, watches, wallets, and handbags may still be eligible when the package is secure and the carrier's tracking, signature, and declared-value rules are followed.

Often eligible
Bags, apparel, and accessories

Clothing, shoes, backpacks, and small travel accessories are usually straightforward returns once they are clean, dry, and packed to avoid shifting or tearing.

Often eligible
Documents, keys, and IDs

Use inner sleeves or envelopes for flat items, and prefer tracked service for anything sensitive that should not be left exposed or unattended.

When Traista may pause or redirect a shipment

  • Loose, spare, damaged, recalled, swollen, or leaking batteries may not move through Traista's standard return workflows.
  • Air routes, international destinations, and higher-value shipments can trigger stricter rules for packaging, labeling, signature service, or declared value.
  • Oversized, unusually fragile, or specialty items may require alternate packaging, manual review, or in-person pickup instead of standard parcel service.

Prohibited Items

Most personal belongings reported through Traista can be returned. The categories below are the items that are typically prohibited from standard carrier service or may require us to refuse shipment for safety, legal, or regulatory reasons.
Aerosols & flammables

Spray paints, fuels, fireworks, lighters, and other combustible or pressurized items are typically prohibited from standard return shipping.

Alcohol & solvents

Alcoholic beverages, perfume, solvents, and similar liquids may be restricted or prohibited depending on carrier rules and route.

Loose or damaged batteries

Loose lithium batteries, spare power banks, and damaged, recalled, swollen, or leaking battery devices may be refused or require special handling.

Medication & controlled substances

Prescription medication, narcotics, and regulated substances may be prohibited unless shipment is specifically permitted by law and carrier policy.

Firearms & ammunition

Weapons, ammunition, and related restricted components are not supported in Traista standard return shipments.

Hazmat, biohazards & perishables

Chemicals, corrosives, biological materials, leaking contents, and perishable goods needing specialized handling are generally prohibited.

Common lost electronics and valuables can often still ship

Laptops, tablets, mobile phones, cameras, headphones, smartwatches, and jewelry are not automatically prohibited on Traista. In many cases they can be returned when the selected carrier permits the shipment and the package follows the applicable rules for installed batteries, packaging, tracking, declared value, and any required signature service.

If a specific item cannot move through standard service, the organization may offer an alternate return method or in-person pickup instead.
